Food Recycling

Fall 2020
Purpose

To find a way to give back to the South Central, Los Angeles community during my time at USC.

Observation

Anywhere near campus and off campus there are many homeless people. LA boasts one of the largest homeless populations in the US. In the alley behind the fraternities, I often see people digging out of the dumpsters for food. I have also been approached numerous times by the homeless to buy them food at the local cafe, Spudnuts.

IDEA

What were some ways that I could get food to the people that need it the most?

Every fraternity and sorority on the row has a personal chef that cooks meals for them 3x a day 4 days a week with a brunch on Friday for most. What I observed from eating at my own fraternity and other sororities was that the food was served in large quantities in chafing dishes for a buffet style.

I'd estimate that at least 30-40% of the food served was wasted and later ended up in the dumpsters that I saw the homeless eating out of. There had to be a way to direct all of the wasted food to the homeless in a much more appetizing and cleaner way.

To create a system that will redirect the food wasted from fraternities and sororities to the homeless population in and around USC's campus.

Development

This is my upcoming project for the fall. I have already spoke with my fraternity and other sororities to coordinate a food pickups to local food banks and churches such as the LA regional food bank, the Trojan Pantry, and St. John's Episcopal Cathedral. This project is currently in the development stage. Check in for further updates this fall!
